Where it came from
Mangara, the Diplomat first appeared in the 2020 expansion Core Set 2021, representing the return of a legendary figure from Magic: The Gathering lore. Mangara is a mystic known for his role in the Mirage block storyline, where he was established as a powerful diplomat and peacemaker among the nations of Jamuraa. His return in this set was designed to reflect his established character, translating his diplomatic nature into a defensive creature card that rewards players for interacting with their opponents.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy artist who sought to capture Mangara's composed and scholarly demeanor. Giancola employed a traditional painterly style to emphasize the character's wisdom and authority. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its unique mechanics, which provided white-aligned card advantage—a rarity in the game's color identity at the time—making it a staple in various Commander formats and a sought-after entry in The List, which reprints impactful cards from Magic's history.
