Where it came from
Mangara's Tome was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage served as the first set in the Mirage block and was notable for being the first set designed specifically to be played in a Limited format, introducing mechanics that emphasized strategic deck building and card advantage.
The card was illustrated by artist Jeff A. Menges, whose work was a staple of early Magic sets. The artwork depicts the titular tome as an enigmatic, mystical artifact, fitting the game's high-fantasy lore of the Zhalfirin mage Mangara. Mechanically, the card was designed as a colorless artifact providing a consistent method for card draw, a utility that ensured it remained a functional, if situational, inclusion in various control-oriented decks during its era.
