Where it came from
Mardu Outrider was originally released in the 2014 Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed to represent the aggressive, raiding philosophy of the Mardu Horde clan on the plane of Tarkir. The card was engineered as a functional creature with the dash mechanic, allowing players to deploy the unit with haste to exert constant pressure on opponents while keeping it safe from board-clearing sorceries.
The version from Mystery Booster 2 features the original illustration by Wesley Burt, who focused on the harsh, desert-nomad aesthetic of the Mardu. The art was well-received for its dynamic sense of movement and its authentic reflection of the clan's brutal, high-speed combat style, maintaining the gritty visual language established by Wizards of the Coast for the Tarkir block.
