Where it came from
The Mariposa Military Base card is part of the Fallout set, released in 2024 as part of a crossover between Magic: The Gathering and the iconic post-apocalyptic role-playing game franchise. The card depicts the clandestine research facility central to the origin of the Super Mutants, serving as a pivotal location in the original 1997 title. Its inclusion acknowledges the dark, military-industrial history of the game's setting, emphasizing the base's legacy as a site of forced evolution.
The artwork, executed by artist Colin Boyer, captures the brutalist, foreboding aesthetic of the base, reflecting the game's signature blend of 1950s retro-futurism and dystopian decay. In the context of the card game's mechanics, it functions as a land card, grounding the player in the desolate, irradiated landscape of the wasteland. The piece was well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the franchise's visual storytelling, effectively translating the iconic architecture into the game's collectible format.
