Marit Lage

Marit Lage first appeared in the Magic: The Gathering expansion Coldsnap in 2006, originating as a legendary avatar of deep-sea lore within the game’s mythology. The token itself, representing the massive creature summoned by Dark Depths, was introduced to standardize gameplay for players using effects that create the avatar. The Dominaria Remastered version of this token was released in 2023, designed to pay homage to the creature's long-standing status as one of the most formidable entities in the game's history.

The visual design of the Marit Lage token across its various iterations focuses on scale and dread, typically emphasizing the creature's colossal, ancient presence rising from icy waters. The artists tasked with this portrayal aim to convey the sheer power of an entity that has existed in the game's lore for decades. Reception among players has remained high, as the token is considered an iconic piece of Magic: The Gathering ephemera, serving as a functional tool that also functions as a visual centerpiece during competitive play.
