Martial Coup

Martial Coup was first released in the 2015 Commander set, but this specific iteration comes from the 2018 Commander release, specifically appearing in the Adaptive Enchantment deck. The card is a classic board wipe that serves a dual purpose: it destroys all creatures and subsequently provides the caster with a small army of soldier tokens, scaling in power based on the amount of mana spent. It reflects the tactical depth of the multiplayer Commander format, where players must balance maintaining their own board presence while neutralizing threats from multiple opponents.

The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a celebrated artist within the Magic: The Gathering community. Villeneuve’s design emphasizes the thematic sense of an organized military takeover, portraying the sudden emergence of armored soldiers amid a chaotic battlefield. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a highly efficient utility spell for white-aligned decks, praised for its ability to stabilize a game state while simultaneously pivoting into an aggressive counter-attack.
