Where it came from
Martyrdom was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to introduce cards that encouraged players to engage with their opponent's strategies, following the power-level fluctuations of the mid-1990s. As a white spell, Martyrdom reflected the color's thematic focus on protection and sacrifice, allowing players to redirect damage from a creature or player to themselves.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent contributor to the early era of the game. Her style often leaned into the somber and expressive, which suited the card's heavy title and mechanics. Upon release, the card was generally viewed as a niche defensive tool rather than a tournament staple, appreciated primarily by players exploring control archetypes or specific thematic deck builds.
