Mass Calcify

Mass Calcify was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during the middle of the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block, the set was designed to explore a world shifting from idyllic folk-horror to a darker, more sinister twilight realm. The card serves as a thematic centerpiece for the white color identity within the set, functioning as a powerful, board-clearing sorcery that reflects the aesthetic of 'calcification'—a magical transformation where creatures are frozen into stone or salt.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Brandon Kitkouski, who captured the grim, high-fantasy tone of Shadowmoor through a focus on dramatic lighting and stark transformation. His design emphasizes the clinical and pervasive nature of the spell, depicting a monochromatic landscape that highlights the set’s preoccupation with the loss of color and vitality.
