Master Biomancer

Master Biomancer first appeared in the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2013, designed as a cornerstone of the Simic Combine, a faction centered on the blue-green color identity. The card captures the faction's thematic focus on bio-engineering and evolution by granting creature tokens additional power and toughness based on the Biomancer's own strength. Its original design was led by the Magic R&D team to facilitate complex board states and provide a strategic payoff for players drafting or building decks around creature-heavy 'go-wide' strategies.

The 2022 Double Masters version, collector number 250, retains the original mechanical design but serves as a premium reprint intended for higher-power draft environments and collector appeal. By placing the card within a set dedicated to powerful, synergistic reprints, Wizards of the Coast acknowledged its status as a staple for Commander format players interested in +1/+1 counter mechanics. While the original art by Greg Staples set a dark, clinical tone for the character, subsequent iterations have maintained this aesthetic of mad science to ensure consistency across the game's expansive lore.
