Where it came from
Master Thief was introduced in the Magic 2012 core set, released in July 2011. It was designed as a blue creature card featuring an 'enter the battlefield' ability that allows a player to gain control of an opponent's artifact. This design choice fit the set's goal of emphasizing color-pie-specific mechanics, reinforcing the identity of blue as the color that manipulates and exerts control over magical items.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who captured the character as a dexterous, roguish figure in a moment of infiltration. The illustration was crafted to evoke a sense of cunning and agility, qualities that align with the thief's gameplay utility. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its tactical versatility in Limited formats, serving as a reliable answer to powerful artifacts while simultaneously providing a body on the battlefield.
