Matoya, Archon Elder

Matoya, Archon Elder was introduced as a card in the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, a tabletop strategy game developed by Square Enix that debuted in 2011. The character originates from the original Final Fantasy title, first released in 1987, where Matoya serves as a blind witch living in a cave, famously known for her search for her stolen crystal eye. This specific card represents a reimagined version of the character, drawing on her enduring role as a mentor and magical authority figure within the franchise's lore.

The card features an illustration consistent with the art direction of the Opus series, which focuses on integrating iconic character designs with a mechanical framework designed for competitive play. These illustrations are commissioned by Square Enix to provide a consistent visual identity across the game's various sets, emphasizing the character's traditional aesthetic of flowing robes and mystical artifacts. The card was received by the player base as a utility piece, valued for its specific abilities that reflect Matoya's penchant for ancient knowledge and spellcasting.
