Where it came from
The Meandering Towershell is a creature card originating from the Khans of Tarkir expansion in Magic: The Gathering, later appearing as a special Secret Lair Drop edition. The card was designed to reflect the flavor of a massive, slow-moving turtle that occupies multiple turns in combat, embodying the Temur Frontier's reliance on patience and formidable size. The artwork for this version was rendered by illustrator Andrew Mar, who emphasized the creature’s immense, forest-bearing shell to capture the mythological quality of a living landmass.
The Secret Lair series, which began in 2019, functions as a curated outlet for Wizards of the Coast to release stylized, often limited-run versions of existing cards featuring experimental or thematic art styles. The Meandering Towershell was included as part of these drops to provide players with a visually distinct alternative to the standard set art. While the card’s unusual mechanic of attacking every other turn sparked long-standing debates regarding its competitive viability, it remains a beloved curiosity among casual players for its unique design and striking visual representation.
