Memorial to Folly

Memorial to Folly was first released in 2018 as part of the Dominaria set, reflecting the game's ongoing exploration of the history of the plane of Dominaria. It belongs to a cycle of 'Memorial' lands designed to provide utility to players by sacrificing themselves for specific, color-aligned effects, in this case, returning a creature card from the graveyard to the hand. The design intent was to offer players a land that functioned as a spell in the late game, providing card advantage in formats where long-term resource management is essential.

The card was included in the 2019 Commander preconstructed decks, specifically within the Merciless Rage set, to bolster the deck's graveyard-centric strategy. Illustrated by Dimitar Marinski, the artwork depicts a solemn, crumbling monument on the plane of Dominaria, capturing the themes of loss and history that define the setting. Its inclusion in the Commander preconstructed environment served to provide players with a functional, accessible tool for retrieving key threats, fitting seamlessly into the recurring motifs of the set's graveyard-focused themes.
