Where it came from
Memory Bank was released as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards set in 2021, an experimental collection designed by Wizards of the Coast for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were created to showcase 'playtest' designs, featuring a distinct, utilitarian aesthetic intended to mimic the look of internal development cards used by the design team during the brainstorming phase. Unlike standard cards, they utilize a stripped-back, monochrome visual style to emphasize mechanical exploration over polish.
The design of the card reflects the whimsical and often chaotic nature of the Mystery Booster drafts, where players encountered unique, non-tournament-legal concepts that subverted typical game rules. Memory Bank was conceived as an artifact that allows players to store mana or resources for future use, a recurring design theme in Magic intended to reward long-term planning. While these cards were received as a curiosity for collectors and limited-format enthusiasts, they were never intended for wide competitive play, functioning instead as a window into the experimental process of game design.
