Where it came from
Merciless Resolve was originally introduced in the 2016 Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the gothic horror plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the dark, desperate atmosphere of a world descending into madness as the angelic protector Avacyn turns against the inhabitants she was created to safeguard. Mechanically, the card captures the theme of the set's 'investigate' mechanic, tasking players with sacrificing resources to uncover the grim secrets hidden within the shadows.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who contributed a haunting aesthetic that aligns with the set's emphasis on dread and loss. It was later included in 'The List,' a curated selection of reprints from Magic's history that appear in set boosters to surprise players with thematic or mechanically significant cards from older expansions. This inclusion ensured that the card remained a functional part of the modern game environment long after its initial rotation from standard play.
