Merry, Warden of Isengard // Merry, Warden of Isengard

The Merry, Warden of Isengard art card is part of the Magic: The Gathering Tales of Middle-earth Art Series, released in 2023. These cards were produced as collectible inserts within collector boosters, intended to showcase the illustrative talent behind the set's expansion into J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. Unlike standard gameplay cards, these items lack game text and are designed strictly for visual appreciation, highlighting the shift toward incorporating high-fantasy aesthetics into the trading card game format.

The artwork for this card was created by artist Livia Prima, who rendered the character of Meriadoc Brandybuck in a style consistent with the broader artistic direction of the set. The design focuses on the character’s post-Isengard role, emphasizing his development from a companion to a figure of authority and tactical importance. Upon release, the set received significant attention for its thematic faithfulness, and the art cards were widely praised by collectors for providing a clean, distraction-free view of the detailed world-building commissioned for the collaboration.
