Provenance

Where it came from

Metamorphosis was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was inspired by themes and characters from One Thousand and One Nights. It was designed to introduce new mechanics and flavor to the burgeoning game, though the expansion was released in relatively limited quantities compared to later sets.

The card illustration was created by artist Quinton Hoover, known for his distinct, fluid style that defined the aesthetic of early Magic sets. Metamorphosis was intended to provide players with a unique utility effect, allowing them to sacrifice a creature to search their library for another creature card. While the card is now regarded as a nostalgic piece of the game's early design history, it remains a notable example of the experimental mechanical risks taken during the game's formative years.
