Migratory Route first appeared as a rare card in the Commander 2013 set, designed to support the multiplayer Commander format by providing a versatile token-generation tool. It reflects Wizards of the Coast's ongoing effort to include cards that scale effectively in games with multiple participants, allowing players to create flying creature tokens based on the number of opponents present. The card is a staple in blue-white strategy decks that focus on resource accumulation and airborne defense.

The card was later reprinted in the 2018 Commander Anthology Volume II, a curated collection intended to provide players with access to popular cards from previous Commander iterations. The illustration, created by artist Nils Hamm, utilizes a signature ethereal and painterly aesthetic that emphasizes the fluid motion of avian spirits.
