Millstone

Millstone was released in 1994 as part of Antiquities, the second expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore themes of archaeology and the remnants of a fallen civilization, fitting into the game's broader narrative of Urza's brothers' war. The design team sought to introduce unique artifacts that offered unconventional strategic advantages, with Millstone specifically introducing a mechanic known as 'milling,' where players force their opponents to discard cards from the top of their library, effectively depleting their deck as a win condition.

The artwork for this particular iteration of Millstone was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent early contributors to the game’s aesthetic. Rush’s design emphasized the gritty, weathered nature of the card's namesake, grounding the magical object in a rugged, earthy visual style that defined the look of the early expansions. While players at the time were initially unsure how to value deck-depletion strategies, the card eventually became a quintessential staple of the game, influencing future card design and spawning the entire 'mill' archetype that remains a popular strategic pillar in the game today.
