Provenance

Where it came from

Mindculling was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicts the final triumph of the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors, as they complete the corruption of the plane of Mirrodin. Designed as a common blue spell, the card mechanically represents the systematic harvesting of information and memory that characterizes the Phyrexian ideology.

The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a prolific artist in the game's history known for his gritty, detailed depictions of fantasy creatures. Walker's design for Mindculling leans into the set's signature aesthetic, emphasizing cold, metallic textures and the eerie, invasive nature of Phyrexian assimilation. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in the limited play environment, where its ability to provide card advantage fit well within the blue-aligned control archetypes of the time.
