Mind Extraction

Mind Extraction was released in 2001 as part of the Apocalypse set, the final expansion in the Invasion block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period of design experimentation for the game, this black-aligned sorcery was created to embody the dark, parasitic nature of the Phyrexian invaders who were central to the set’s narrative. The card’s mechanics allow players to discard cards from an opponent's hand based on the type of cards already revealed, reflecting the flavor of systematic destruction and information gathering favored by the faction.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prominent illustrator known for his dynamic and atmospheric work throughout the game's history. His depiction of the extraction process emphasizes the visceral, high-fantasy horror aesthetic of the Phyrexian conflict, aiming to ground the player in the desperate stakes of the Invasion storyline.
