Where it came from
Mindleecher was introduced in the Commander 2020 set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2020 to coincide with the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion. As part of a series of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the Commander format, the card was created to provide a unique tribal support mechanism for the Mutate mechanic, allowing players to manipulate their opponents' libraries while growing the power of their own creatures.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who utilized the set's signature aesthetic of hyper-evolved, monstrous mutations to depict the creature's parasitic nature. Within the gaming community, Mindleecher was noted for its utility in mill-themed strategies, effectively balancing the risk of its casting cost with the long-term payoff of its activated ability, securing its place as a staple for players building around the Dimir color identity.
