Where it came from
Mindslaver was originally introduced in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering set Mirrodin, designed as a powerful, high-mana artifact that allows a player to take full control of an opponent's turn. It embodies the high-concept, metallic, and often ruthless aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane, where machines and artificial life dominate the landscape. The card became a cornerstone of combo decks in multiple formats due to its unique ability to disrupt an opponent's resources and strategy entirely.
The 'Breaking News' version, numbered 80, is a specialized variant released in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction set as part of a thematic 'bonus sheet' styled after sensationalized headlines from the Wild West. The artwork for this version leans into a distinct retro-noir aesthetic, contrasting sharply with the original card's industrial feel while maintaining the mechanical identity of the artifact. It serves as a visual reimagining of a classic game piece, curated for players who appreciate the stylistic breadth of modern Magic: The Gathering card treatments.
