Where it came from
The Minion of Tevesh Szat was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to be a standalone experience with a thematic focus on a post-apocalyptic, frozen world, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of the base game. The card represents one of the many followers of Tevesh Szat, a major antagonist in the game's lore known for his duplicity and mastery of the dark arts.
The artwork for the card was provided by Quinton Hoover, a prominent early contributor to the game's visual identity. Hoover's style typically emphasized flowing lines and expressive, often haunting, character portraits that captured the grim tone of the Ice Age setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if niche, piece of black-aligned utility, remembered by players primarily for its role in establishing the expansive and interconnected narrative of the Dominarian plane.
