Where it came from
Minthara, Merciless Soul was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to translate the character Minthara Baenre, a popular antagonist and companion from the video game Baldur's Gate 3, into the mechanics of the tabletop trading card game. It features the 'Background' mechanic, a thematic design choice that allows players to represent the character's origins and personal history through a secondary, synergistic card.
The artwork for this particular collector number was crafted to reflect Minthara's status as a Drow Paladin of the Absolute, emphasizing her cold, tactical demeanor and dark aesthetic. As part of a set dedicated to the Dungeons & Dragons universe, the card was well-received by fans of the Baldur's Gate franchise for its faithful characterization. It has since become a staple in Commander formats, valued for its powerful ability to reward players for leaving the battlefield, which aligns with the character's ruthless personality in the source material.
