Where it came from
Mirage Mockery was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set, an expansion centered on the return of the Phyrexians and the corruption of the plane of Mirrodin. Designed for the Commander format, the card reflects the set's thematic focus on biological integration and artificial perfection. Mechanically, it serves as a blue-aligned enchantment that allows a player to copy a creature whenever an opponent targets one, leaning into the deceptive and reactive nature of blue mana.
The artwork, created by illustrator Slawomir Maniak, emphasizes the unsettling, biomechanical aesthetic of New Phyrexia. Maniak, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering, utilized a palette of cold blues and sharp metallic highlights to depict the fluidity of the mirage effect against the backdrop of an oil-corrupted landscape. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile utility piece for blue-based defensive strategies, valued by players for its ability to punish opponents who target their own high-value permanents.
