Mirror Gallery was originally released as a rare artifact in the 2004 Betrayers of Kamigawa set for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing from Japanese folklore and the expansion's theme of the spirit world overlapping with the mortal realm, the card was designed to mechanically represent the distortion of identity and the doubling of legendary entities. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a rotating selection of cards from Magic's history inserted into modern booster packs—reflects its enduring status as a unique utility piece for Commander players.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose work frequently features heavily stylized, slightly surreal imagery. In designing the Mirror Gallery, Critchlow sought to evoke the sensation of an infinite, fractured reflection, utilizing a muted, ethereal color palette to emphasize the mystical nature of the enchantment. Upon its debut, the card was received as a fascinating 'build-around' item, prized by players for its ability to circumvent the game's strict legendary rule and allow for multiple copies of singular, iconic characters on the battlefield simultaneously.
