Misdirection

Misdirection was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Mercadia, the expansion introduced themes of political intrigue and manipulation, reflecting a departure from previous high-fantasy tropes toward a more complex, social-economic narrative. The card serves as a tactical tool for redirection, fitting the set’s mechanical focus on shifting spell targets and disrupting opponent strategies.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Daren Bader, whose work captures the ephemeral and deceptive nature of the spell’s effect. Bader’s aesthetic for the piece leans into the stylistic visual language established by Wizards of the Coast during this era, emphasizing a sense of motion and magical interference. Upon its release, Misdirection was recognized by competitive players for its utility in counter-magic strategies, solidifying its place as a staple of the 'pitch spell' cycle, which allows players to cast effects without spending mana by exiling cards from their hand.
