Where it came from
Mistvein Borderpost was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set represented the culmination of the Alara block narrative, where five previously isolated planar shards were reunited into one world. Designed as an artifact that could be played for a reduced cost by returning a basic land to its owner's hand, the borderpost served as both a mana-fixing utility and a mechanical representation of the shifting geography of the world of Alara.
The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prominent fantasy illustrator known for his contributions to the aesthetic identity of the Alara block. Briclot utilized a vibrant, angular style to depict the borderposts, which were designed in the lore to act as conduits for mana flowing across the reunified continent. Upon release, the borderposts were received as functional tools for multicolored decks in the Limited format, though they were noted for their distinct visual style which contrasted with the traditional, naturalistic depictions of mana sources.
