Provenance

Where it came from

Mogg Flunkies was featured in the 1998 World Championship Decks as part of the 'Brian Selden' deck, which secured the title at that year's Magic: The Gathering World Championship in Seattle. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, allowing players to purchase exact replicas of the cards used by the top eight finishers, complete with gold-bordered backs and distinct signature stamps on the front.

The card itself originates from the Stronghold expansion, released earlier in 1998, and reflects the aggressive, creature-heavy goblin tribal strategy prevalent in the competitive meta at the time. Designed to reward players for maintaining a board presence of fellow goblin creatures, the card's mechanics were illustrated by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, whose distinctive fantasy art style helped define the visual identity of the game during the late 1990s.
