Mogg Sentry

Mogg Sentry was originally introduced in the Tempest expansion in 1997, designed to reflect the chaotic, aggressive nature of the Goblins in Magic: The Gathering lore. The card mechanics, which punish opponents for controlling more creatures, encapsulate the flavor of a small, reckless group of Goblins standing their ground against superior numbers. Its inclusion in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005 marked a transition for the card, updating the frame to the modern aesthetic introduced in Eighth Edition while preserving its rare status among the base set's creature pool.

The artwork for the Ninth Edition version was rendered by Greg Staples, an established illustrator known for his atmospheric and gritty contributions to the game. Staples moved away from the more whimsical goblin depictions of the 1990s, opting for a dark, visceral style that emphasizes the Sentry's defensive posture. Upon its release in the core set, the card was received as a niche defensive option for aggressive red decks, though it remained a familiar presence for players engaging with the expanded card pool of the mid-2000s.
