Provenance

Where it came from

Mongrel Pack was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Tempest was the first expansion in the Rath Cycle, a narrative arc centered on a planar invasion. The card was designed to function as a low-cost creature with a mechanic requiring the player to discard cards, a high-risk, high-reward strategy that defined the aggressive playstyles encouraged by the set's mechanical themes.

The artwork for Mongrel Pack was illustrated by Christopher Rush, a foundational artist for the game whose work defined much of the early visual identity of Magic. Rush was tasked with depicting a coordinated, lupine hunting party, utilizing his signature style to emphasize the aggressive nature of the creatures. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, if situational, utility creature, frequently utilized in limited formats where discard management was a central component of gameplay strategy.
