Where it came from
Monkey Cage was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering card game. This set was designed to be played in a unique, accessible format where two themed decks are shuffled together to create an instant game. The card itself functions as an enchantment that generates a steady stream of Ape creature tokens, reflecting the chaotic and lighthearted themes that often characterize the Jumpstart project's design philosophy.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who has contributed extensively to the game's aesthetic. His approach for this piece emphasizes the whimsical and slightly frantic nature of the card's effect, capturing the visual energy of a cage overflowing with primates. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to green-aligned token decks, noted primarily for its utility in limited play environments and its thematic consistency within the set.
