Where it came from
The Monster Manual // Zoological Study card was released as part of the Battle for Baldur's Gate promotional set in 2022. It serves as a tribute to the long-standing tradition of Dungeons & Dragons bestiaries, bridging the gap between tabletop roleplaying history and the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to evoke the aesthetic of a classic fantasy adventurer's journal, utilizing the 'Rulebook' art style that was central to the aesthetic identity of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion.
The illustration work was executed by Billy Christian, who leaned into the nostalgic, ink-washed style reminiscent of early edition D&D sourcebooks. The goal was to provide players with an authentic, academic feel that suggested the card was torn directly from an in-game reference text. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion and its ability to represent the scholarly flavor of D&D within a card game format.
