Monstrous Carabid was released in 2009 as part of Alara Reborn, the third and final set in the Shards of Alara block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was notable for being composed entirely of multi-colored cards, representing the final convergence of the five distinct shards of the plane of Alara into a single, unified world. This card serves as a representative of the Jund shard, a savage, volcanic ecosystem defined by the constant cycle of predator and prey.

The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, a long-time contributor to the game known for his dark and visceral aesthetic. Kendall’s design captures the insectoid, bio-mechanical brutality central to the Jund faction. Mechanically, the card features the 'cascade' keyword, a mechanic that defined the set's high-variance gameplay by allowing players to cast additional spells for free.
