Where it came from
Moonveil Regent was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to embody the gothic horror aesthetic central to the Innistrad setting, specifically focusing on the theme of vampires attempting to stabilize the eternal night plaguing the plane. It was crafted as a high-impact rare to provide players with card selection and damage output in aggressive decks.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a vivid, celestial color palette to distinguish the regent from the more muted tones of the surrounding set. The design reflects the creature's lore as a guardian of the moon's power, aiming to balance thematic flavor with mechanical utility. Upon release, it became a staple in Commander formats for its ability to refill a player's hand, earning recognition for both its utility and its striking visual presentation.
