Morbid Hunger

Morbid Hunger was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to shift the game's focus toward the graveyard, introducing mechanics that turned a player's discarded cards into a functional resource. As a common sorcery, this card was intended to provide accessible removal for black decks, offering a balance between lifegain and creature destruction that reinforced the set's thematic preoccupation with death and decay.

The artwork was created by Eric Peterson, who employed a visceral, dark style consistent with the gothic aesthetic of the Odyssey block. Peterson’s illustration depicts a distorted, hungry entity, capturing the card's function as a life-draining spell. Upon its release, it was regarded as a standard utility card for Limited formats, appreciated for its reliability in managing opposing threats while stabilizing the player's own health total during the mid-game.
