Where it came from
Mordenkainen's Polymorph was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, the first set to fully integrate Dungeons & Dragons lore into the card game's mechanics. The card was designed to capture the versatility of the iconic spell from D&D fifth edition, allowing players to transform creatures into more powerful forms, reflecting the chaotic yet tactical nature of high-level arcane magic.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who aimed to depict the classic, slightly mischievous aesthetic associated with the wizard Mordenkainen. Within the competitive community, the card is recognized for its thematic design that bridges the gap between traditional tabletop roleplaying flavor and the strategic, spell-centric playstyle favored by blue-aligned decks in Magic.
