Mortivore

Mortivore was originally introduced in the Odyssey set in 2001 as part of the graveyard-focused mechanics that defined that era of Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to scale in power based on the number of creature cards in all graveyards, effectively serving as a centerpiece for black-aligned decks that thrived on attrition and recursive play. Its inclusion in the Tenth Edition base set in 2007 served as a nod to these earlier mechanics, reintroducing the creature to a new generation of players within the modern core set framework.

The illustration for this iteration was rendered by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, dark, and highly detailed style helped define the macabre aesthetic of the game during the mid-2000s. Critchlow focused on a visceral depiction of the creature, emphasizing its gluttonous, undead nature to match its mechanical function. The card was generally well-received by players who enjoyed high-risk, high-reward threats, remaining a staple of casual and mid-level competitive play throughout its lifespan in the core set rotation.
