Mortuary Mire was originally printed as a common land in the Battle for Zendikar set in 2015, designed to provide utility in limited formats by allowing players to return a creature card from their graveyard to the top of their library upon entry. The card features art by the veteran illustrator Titus Lunter, who captured the grim, swampy aesthetic of the Zendikar plane. Its design philosophy centered on giving black-aligned decks a repeatable, low-cost way to maintain board presence during the grindy mid-to-late game stages typical of sealed and draft environments.

The version included in Commander 2020, marked as collector number 289, was released to support the preconstructed deck Archetype of the swarm. This reprint maintained the original mechanical identity while fitting into the broader ecosystem of the Commander format, where utility lands are highly valued for their ability to provide functional card advantage without occupying a spell slot. The card has been widely accepted by players as a staple inclusion for decks focusing on graveyard recursion or attrition strategies, owing to its accessibility and straightforward utility.
