Mosquito Guard

Mosquito Guard was released in February 2008 as part of the Morningtide expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Serving as the second set in the Lorwyn block, Morningtide introduced the concept of tribal synergies that focused on classes rather than the traditional race-based typings of the previous set. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature to provide utility for decks focusing on the Kithkin tribe, a signature race of the Lorwyn setting defined by their communal nature and close-knit village structures.

The artwork was commissioned from Randy Gallegos, a prolific illustrator who has contributed to the game for decades. Gallegos sought to capture the defensive, communal essence of the Kithkin by depicting the armored soldier in an alert, ready stance. The piece was well-received by players for its clear visual storytelling and its adherence to the distinct, whimsical yet grounded aesthetic that characterized the Lorwyn and Morningtide block, helping to solidify the Kithkin's visual identity as the steadfast guardians of their woodland home.
