Mu Yanling

Mu Yanling was introduced in 2018 as part of the Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling, a two-deck product designed specifically for the Chinese market. Wizards of the Coast developed this set to celebrate Chinese culture and mythology within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, marking a deliberate effort to expand the game's cultural representation by featuring characters native to a new plane, mountains of Jamuraa aside. The cards were printed in both English and Simplified Chinese, aiming to provide an accessible entry point for new players while honoring regional storytelling traditions.

The character of Mu Yanling was conceptualized as a blue-aligned planeswalker associated with wind and water, reflecting a serene yet powerful aesthetic common in wuxia-inspired fantasy. The artwork was commissioned from Chinese artists to ensure an authentic visual identity that resonated with the intended audience. Upon release, the set was noted for its unique status as a standalone product outside of the standard expansion cycles, receiving praise for its cohesive thematic design and the distinct, flowing visual style of the planeswalker cards.
