Where it came from
Mudbutton Torchrunner was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase supplemental set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to introduce a multiplayer variant where players travel between different planes of existence, using 'planar cards' to alter the rules of the game. The Torchrunner serves as a common-rarity creature within the Goblin-themed Chaos Reigns deck, emphasizing the aggressive and high-risk playstyle often associated with red-aligned Goblin cards.
The card features artwork by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his gritty, detailed style. Walker was tasked with capturing the essence of a chaotic, fire-wielding Goblin. The design intention was to create a creature that presents a dilemma for the opponent: if they destroy it, the Torchrunner deals direct damage to a target, staying true to the unpredictable and destructive personality traits historically assigned to the Goblin creature type in the game's lore.
