Where it came from
The Mukotai Ambusher was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The card reflects the set's central thematic synthesis, blending traditional Japanese folklore with a high-tech, cyberpunk aesthetic. Within the narrative of the plane of Kamigawa, the Mukotai are a faction of street-level outlaws and mercenaries operating within the neon-drenched cityscape of Towashi, embodying the set's focus on the tension between spiritual heritage and urban modernization.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's signature vibrant color palette to emphasize the character's agile, predatory nature. Mechanically, the card utilizes the ninjutsu keyword, a callback to the original Kamigawa block from 2004 that allows the creature to be swapped into play from the hand during combat. The design was well-received by players for successfully integrating legacy mechanics into the modern, high-energy visual landscape of the Neon Dynasty release.
