Where it came from
Multani, Maro-Sorcerer was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Legacy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Representing a pivotal figure in the game's lore as the ancient and powerful forest spirit of Yavimaya, the card was designed to mechanically reflect his connection to life force, with his power and toughness scaling based on the number of cards in all players' hands. This design choice solidified him as a high-impact, late-game threat that rewarded resource accumulation.
The card features distinct, ethereal artwork by Eric Peterson, who was a recurring contributor during Magic's early years. His depiction emphasizes Multani's elemental nature, moving away from more humanoid representations to lean into the concept of a living forest entity. Upon its release, the card became a beloved staple for casual and Commander players, appreciated for its flavorful design and the way it shifts the dynamics of a game as players hold onto their cards.
