Where it came from
Murder Investigation was released in 2015 as part of the Magic Origins set, which functioned as the final core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The design team intended this set to serve as a narrative bridge, exploring the backstories of five iconic Planeswalkers. The card itself reflects the investigative themes and detective tropes prevalent in the set's aesthetic, providing a mechanical way to represent a crime scene by generating a flurry of tokens upon the death of an enchanted creature.
The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, who was commissioned to capture a cinematic, top-down perspective of a crime scene. His illustration focuses on the grim utility of the mechanics, emphasizing the aftermath of a conflict. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece within Limited play formats, recognized more for its flavorful representation of a investigation than for its competitive dominance in Constructed formats.
