Provenance

Where it came from

Murderous Redcap was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a shift toward hybrid mana costs and darker, folklore-inspired themes set within the gloomy, perpetually twilight realm of Lorwyn. This creature draws directly from British folklore, specifically the Northumbrian redcap, a malevolent goblin-like entity said to inhabit ruined castles and dye its cap in the blood of its victims.

The card illustration was created by artist Dave Kendall, whose signature gritty and gothic aesthetic perfectly captured the macabre nature of the Shadowmoor plane. Mechanically, the card became a defining staple in competitive play due to its 'persist' keyword, which allowed it to return to the battlefield after death. Its synergy with cards that remove its -1/-1 counters solidified its place in high-level combo decks for years following its debut.
