Muscle Burst was originally released as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2001. As a common green instant, it was designed to support the set's graveyard-focused mechanics, specifically the threshold ability, which granted cards enhanced effects once a player had seven or more cards in their graveyard. The card's simple yet functional design allowed players to pump a creature and gain life, serving as a tactical combat trick during a period when the game was heavily emphasizing interaction with the discard pile.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Eric Peterson, who contributed a wide array of pieces to the game during the early 2000s. His illustration captures the visceral, physical transformation implied by the card's name, fitting the aesthetic expectations for the Odyssey block.
