Card face

What it does

Cumulative upkeep 1 generic mana (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

tap: Put a music counter on target creature. If it doesn't have "At the beginning of your upkeep, destroy this creature unless you pay 1 generic mana for each music counter on it," it gains that ability.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Musician card, numbered 85, was released as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1995. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Ice Age was the first standalone set not requiring the original core sets to play, aimed at revitalizing the game's growth and introducing a distinct thematic world focused on eternal winter and ancient tribal conflicts.

The artwork for the card was created by fantasy illustrator Susan Van Camp. Her design reflects the set's somber, primitive aesthetic, depicting a bard-like figure within the frozen landscape. While the card is often cited by players for its complex and highly restrictive ability to tap or untap target creatures, it remains a notable example of the experimental mechanical design prevalent during the middle era of Magic's history.
