Where it came from
Myojin of Seeing Winds was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set drew heavily on Japanese mythology and folklore, introducing the Myojin as a cycle of powerful, legendary deity-like creatures representing the Shinto concept of kami. The card was designed to be a top-end threat, utilizing a unique 'divinity counter' mechanic that granted the creature indestructible status while providing a massive resource advantage upon removal.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Heather Hudson, who was tasked with capturing the ethereal and imposing presence of the spirit of wind. Hudson utilized a distinct, flowing style that emphasizes the character's connection to the sky and clouds, aligning with the block's focus on spirits and arcane magic. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful, high-mana-cost centerpiece for control decks, favored by players who appreciated its ability to swing the momentum of a game through significant card draw.
